My path to ceramic art was not direct. I did not begin studying art until my senior year at the University of Minnesota, where I graduated with a BA in Philosophy. After graduation, I moved to Virginia and accepted a job in banking. Although I worked in banking for five years and later in human resources for another five years, I did not give up on studying art and ceramics. While working my “day job”, I enrolled in a wheel throwing class with a local Virginia potter and quickly found myself spending all my free time perfecting the fundamentals of throwing. I next challenged myself by studying art at the Corcoran for three years, focusing on ceramics. While at the Corcoran, I accepted a one year adjunct instructor position. At the same time, I accepted several other teaching positions at local community art centers in Northern Virginia where I continue to teach and challenge myself today.
